Edgedancer is where she shines (she's very much a side character in OB), and I know quite a few people who didn't like Lift in WoR but came away from ED with much higher opinions of her. She lies to herself and to others all the time but underneath her irreverence she has a heart of gold. With that said, I will soft-sell you on Edgedancer by saying that Lift is fun for me to read because she is a terribly unreliable narrator. There is also a magic/worldbuilding reveal in Edgedancer that will help you make sense of one of the interludes in OB and spot hints of some behind-the-scenes activity (visible in WoK and WoR as well, once you know what to look for), but again that reveal can also be enjoyed afterward. I like her, and loved Edgedancer, but the whole thing is Lift POV.Īs others have said there are some important developments in Edgedancer that explain certain character motivations, but it won't hurt you to go back and pick those out after the fact. If you dislike Lift then jump straight into OB. Why BS decided to include this is odd, considering not that many people at all probably read it without having read the previous SLA books. I started reading Edgedancer and like it a lot so far, minus having to click through the entire prologue on my Kindle once I ascertained for sure that its exactly the same as her chapter in WoR. UPDATE: This really generated a lot more comments and turned out to be somewhat controvertial (how a simple post asking for advice as to reading order generated flames and negativity truly boggles my mind), but I appreciate the input from those who actually answered my question and helped me out. Can you all please "soft sell" me on reading Edgedancer before Oathbringer? I know deep down that it's the right thing to do, but am just having a little trouble with motivation.Īnother thing that's throwing me off is that it's a Novella, and for instance in the ASoIAF books it makes way more sense to read all of the full-length ones before tackling the novellas.
Plus I can't say I really give two hoots about Lift from what I've read so far. How important is it realistically to read Edgedancer after Words of Radiance? I am almost done with Words and am super tempted to move straight to Oathbringer, because it's way, way hype, almost brand new, and I know it advances the plot way more than Edgedancer.
My question is all in the post title, really.
